In preparation for BeautyCon, we are giving ourselves a 10 step Korean facial. Ok, it’s really a skincare routine that the most beautiful girls in the world follow each and every day. I mean, have you even seen a Korean girl with bad skin? It’s unlikely that you’ll come across a Korean woman who doesn’t have the most gorgeous, flawless, and glowing skin. Korean women invest their time into a 10-step daily skincare routine. Yes, it sounds daunting, but the results are well worth the time. It will leave your skin feeling refreshed and looking like the fabulous woman that you are.
Ok, are you ready for it? Here are the steps to obtaining flawless, glowing skin.
Step 1: Oil Cleanser
Start with an oil cleanser to remove your makeup and any other products like sunscreen, etc. Massage it over your face (do not wet your face before applying) and neck and then add a little warm water to blend the cleanser. Rinse off with warm water (cold water makes it harder to remove).
Step 2: Foam Cleanser
Next cleanse with a foam cleanser. Have you ever woken up in the morning and washed and dried your face only to find makeup was still on your face? This is the reason for this step and a second cleanse. One just isn’t enough to remove makeup and pollutants. Apply the water-based foam cleanser to wet skin and then massage, rinse, and dry your face. You may also wish to use a soft sponge to aid in the process.
Step 3: Exfoliator
Next, apply and exfoliator and gently massage your face. Exfoliation is important because it cleans out clogged pores and removes dead skin cells, revealing brighter and healthier skin. I am a huge fan of exfoliating and do it 3-4 times a week. However, if you have sensitive skin then I would suggest that you keep it to 1-2 times per week.
Step 4: Toner
Now that your skin is clean and you’ve exfoliated to reveal fresh skin, it is time to repair and hydrate it. Applying a toner will prep your skin for what is to come. A toner will help balance your skins pH levels. I apply it to a cotton pad and then gently swipe over my skin. You may also use your hands. I just always feel like most of it ends up in the sink using that method, so I prefer a cotton pad.
Step 5: Essence
Some say that this is the most important part of the routine. Essence is similar to a serum but more watery. Call it serum and toner fusion. The purpose of this step is to hydrate and repair your skin. Apply it by gently patting onto the skin.
Step 6: Serum, Boosters, or Ampoule Treatments
This step is for all of those battling brown spots or hyperpigmentation. Hand raised! These serums are super concentrated versions of essences and directly treat the issues you are most concerned about. This could be large pores, wrinkles, acne, or in my case, the dreaded hyperpigmentation. Apply these products by gently patting into your skin to help brighten skin, smooth out fine lines, or fade sunspots.
Step 7: Mask
Can you say ahhhh…. I always find applying a mask to be incredibly relaxing because I use this time to just be quiet and still. Choose a mask based on your skins needs. There are so many out there that help with different skin issues. There are brightening ones, firming ones, hydrating ones, and so many more. Like exfoliating, this step is only necessary 1-2 times per week. Apply the mask and leave on for approximately 15-20 minutes.
Step 8: Eye Cream
A good eye cream helps support the thin and delicate skin around the eyes. Wrinkles usually first appear here, but a good eye cream can help prevent wrinkles and also repair damage already done. They also help reduce the appearance of dark circles and under eye bags. Apply by gently tapping into the skin (NEVER RUB) around your eyes being careful to not get into your eyes.
Step 9: Face Cream
We’re getting close to the finish line. This next step is to help lock in moisture and smooth out fine lines. Hydrated skin is the secret to having healthy, dewy, and glowing skin. Gently massage or pat the moisturizer into your face and neck (don’t forget your neck). This step is important to do morning and night. I use a lighter moisturizer for day and a heavier cream for night.
Step 10: SPF
Ok, this is the step I NEVER forget. I was not so good as a child or throughout my teens and early twenties. However, now I never go without it. I cannot tell you enough how important sunscreen is to the health of your future skin. Sunscreen helps to prevent wrinkles, sun spots, and most of all, skin cancer. Needless to say, I am obsessed. I apply sunscreen every morning (even if I will be indoors for most of the day) prior to my makeup. I also reapply it throughout the day as necessary.
